Catatonia is a form of the terrible mental disease known as schizophrenia. A common symptom is extreme muscular rigidity, so that catatonic patients may be "frozen" for hours or even days in a single position. In general use, catatonic most often describes people who are not ill but who likewise seem incapable of moving or of changing expression.
